Year 9-10: The Amazing Race with Maths (Secondary)

Course Summary:

Inspired by the “The Amazing Race”, the two-day workshop will explore and extend key mathematical concepts utilising a series of games and activities. Designed to stimulate and challenge the mathematical abilities of gifted students, the workshop will culminate into an Amazing Race competition. Students will work together and compete in groups in deducing clues, tackling complex puzzles, solving real-life problems and overcoming insurmountable challenges in a race against time.

This interactive workshop not only brings maths to life but also provide a great opportunity for the students to mix with like-minded peers. Let the Race begin and see who be crowned the ultimate Amazing Race champion!

The workshop will be led by Dr Kwok, who is both an experienced educator and a gifted individual himself. Dr Kwok has a Phd from UNSW, is a member of Mensa and achieved a ATAR equivalent of 99+.

What Students Will Do:

· Challenge and apply key mathematical concepts in different contexts via a combination of theory, exercises and challenges.

· Key mathematical concepts include Advanced Geometric Reasoning, Complex Algebra and Patterns, Advanced Statistics and Probabilities, Pythagoras and Trigonometry, Advanced Data Representation and Interpretation, and more.

· Introduction to HSC-Style questions.

· Apply and integrate mathematic knowledge to solve complex problems

· Present and “teach” alternative solutions to other class members

· On the second day of the workshop, students will participate in the Ultimate Amazing Race challenge.
