About the Event
Course Summary:
How does news engage readers while communicating information? How is one's mind and perception of the world influenced by news outlets? How can we maintain critical thinking while interpreting facts from news? This two-day workshop will explore and extend key English concepts based on the Australian curriculum utilising engaging and intellectually-stimulating activities that focus not only on skill acquisition, but also on the nurturing of the gifted mind to incorporate learning into daily life.
The workshop will end with a writing project where students will be divided into groups to write a biased article on the same event to investigate how media influences one’s mind.
The workshop will be led by Ms Wong, a high school English teacher in Sydney and a tutor and mentor for gifted students worldwide from countries including Australia, Hong Kong and the UK. Ms Wong is a member of Mensa and graduated with a Masters Degree in Gifted Education from UNSW with excellence.
By the end of the workshop, students will be able to:
- Analyse and learn about connotations and associations of different words
- Learn to tell the difference between facts and opinions as well as opinions that are presented like facts
- Reflect on their experience with receiving information and acquire better awareness and skills in digesting and filtering new information.
