About the Event

Workshop Summary:

Can maths and games be mixed together? Can you learn and have fun at the same time? This workshop will explore and extend key mathematical concepts based on the Australian curriculum utilising board games and activities in a fun and engaging way.

It will motivate and challenge the brightest students to go beyond their current level of understanding. Our mix of traditional board and card games along with other maths-based activities will bring out the creative mindset of gifted students as they learn and extend new mathematical scenarios and problems. It will also be a fun and rewarding social experience as students will play, learn and compete from other like-minded peers.

What Students Will Do:

· Explore key mathematical concepts via a combination of theory, exercises and challenges utilising games and other fun activities.

· Mathematical concepts include Data and Interpretation, Financial Mathematics, Patterns and Algebra, Probabilities, and more.

· Mental maths exercises

· NAPLAN and Selective-Test style questions

· High-level problem solving

· In the final session of the day, students will compete in a mathematics competition encompassing all the concepts learnt throughout the day.

This workshop is designed for gifted students in grades 5-6. The workshop is suitable for students who enjoy maths, particularly those with a love for board games and challenges. (Please note the pace and  mathematical concepts covered are different to those designed for grades 3-4.)

The workshop will be led by Dr Kwok:

Dr Kwok is both an experienced educator and a gifted individual himself. He has a Phd from UNSW, is a member of Mensa and achieved an ATAR equivalent of 99+.  He has been teaching Maths and other subjects for many years, especially for gifted students. He has also completed a Mini-Certificate in Gifted Education (Mini-COGE) from UNSW and has been invited as a speaker at Mensa events.
